Lines, Tell Tales and other Yarns on and from the Internet
Please let me know of any other "sightings"!
EDITOR'S comment: Both "Humbly" and "Me Too" are
examples of the kind of story all sailors love to tell - trial, tribulation, storm and
pestilence (both have "happy endings" by the way) - I have a "gentler"
story about three Sharks cruising the west end of Lake Ontario, a couple of years ago, but
I am still trying to read my log! Meantime, does anyone else have "good news" to
tell?

"HAPPY THOUGHTS" FROM THE WEST COAST
Date: Sun, 27 Oct 1996
Nice to find you...I've been searching the web for the last year,
looking for a shark page.
Name is James Watts, I'm the owner of #229, White Dwarf, sailing out of
Victoria, BC. Used to own Mizrab, #264, out of Saskatchewan, but I got
tired of sailing 4 months of the year. Now I can sail any time.
File attached of our annual July 4 (my wife's birthday) lamb roast on
the beach at Portland Island. Pretty tough to take. As you can see, the
sailing here is pretty nice. Hope to hear from other Shark owners
sometime...
The location is Portland Island Marine Park, a couple of miles from the ferry
dock at Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island (north of Victoria). The people in the
shot are Anne Hill on the left(my wife) and me on the right.
We didn't get to do much cruising this year, for various reasons, (just one
week in the San Juans), but last year we did two weeks in Desolation Sound,
which was fabulous. You can go for days without seeing anyone...
I'm planning on rejoining the Shark Class Ass'n and I'm going to order the
handbook shortly, since I gave mine away when I sold #264. Looking forward to
connecting with other Shark sailors in the future. I have a billion shots of
sailing out here, some of which I may actually digitize and send on to you.
Let your World Champion bask in the limelight for a while longer...
PS the Saltspring Island lamb was wonderful.

Dear Bill,
I enjoyed browsing your web page and applaud your efforts to date.
Although I am not sailing Sharks at present, so many pleasant seasons of
involvement are not easily forgotten. Further to your request for
assistance to complete the list of World Champions, please note that the
Champion in 1978, at Kingston, Ontario, was Clare Norris, on Shark 945
named "A Quarter To Ten". Clare was sailing out of Port Credit Yacht
Club in those days. Dave Ibonie and I were crew on that occasion and on
many others.
BTW, Clare now sails a CS34 out of Thornbury Yacht Club. Anyone wishing
to contact him may do so via this address.
Good luck with the page. I'll drop by again.

Hello Bill,
I recently purchased a Shark (June 20/96) and have at least 1000
questions. I am very busy this summmer and won't be able to get her in the
water until this weekend at the earliest. You can expect an order for a
handbook in the mail shortly. Knowing how to tune the boat is my primary
concern initially. As yet she is not named, but I will forward that
information as soon as possible. Her hull # is S.712.68, I believe this
means she is Shark # 712 built in 68. Could you verify this? Her home port
is Botwood, Newfoundland, moored at the Exploits Yacht Club. I intend to
join the class association later this season or at the latest next spring.
I am apprehensive about posting my internet address, however, the
opportunity for gaining knowledge and comraderie is too great. You may post
my address on your page, I am willing to accept the good with the possible bad.
I have one sighting to report. When I purchased my boat I noticed
another Shark moored at the Holyrood Yacht Club, Holyrood, Newfoundland. She
was a newer boat than mine with a red hull. I don't have any particulars but
will forward them if I find out.
Finding your page was very encouraging, in fact it may have tipped
the scales in my purchasing a shark. Any boat which has such a loyal group
of owners/users must be something special.

Bill-
I'd just like to thank you for the Shark page. I recently purchased
#302 Desperado and have thoroughly enjoyed the page. I sail out of
McCotters Marina on the Pamlico river in North Carolina and have raced
Desperao a couple of times PHRF and done reasonably well. I actually
raced her before she was for sale and decided to keep a lookout for
other Sharks. I do have a old handbook (1976) but wonder if there is
an updated version?
It is a great boat, I hope to do some serious cruising and racing.
Thanks Again-

Hi Bill:
I thoroughly enjoyed your web site on sharks. I have been sailing sharks
for the past 5 years. I found them to be excellent boats. Too forgiving
at times. I don't mind to "twig" them a bit to make them go faster. May
be we should start a "super" shark class for the "non-class spec" souped
up boats. Kind of hot-rod shark for the aging boomer?
Here are the additional shark sightings:
Humber College Sailing Center, Toronto. -- 5
Sailing Adventures, Hamilton Harbour Commission's sailing school -- 2
Meaford marina (owned by a former sailing school, on cradles for at
least 4 yrs) -- 6
Good wind in 96.

Rumour of a sinking? Read this from Phil Van Horne, Golden
Horseshoe Regional VP

Thomas W. Pochereva taught sailing at the Baie d'Urfe Yacht Club
back in the late 60's. Surfing the web from Kailua, Hawaii he dropped in to say Aloha.

Phil Cheevers' sails "Humbly Magnificent..." (my
shortened version of his boat's name), #1089, out of Niagara-on-the-Lake Sailing Club. His
"Humbly" Site on Compuserve is an interesting call in itself. But for a
harrowing sailor's tale try this .....

Don MacKenzie, who sails "Seaforth" out of The
Quartermaster's Marina at Charlottetown, P.E.I. was given our address by a friend who
visited our display at the Toronto Boat Show and writes:

After reading "Humbly", Matt Koch, who sails
"Mischief #286 writes:

Read about (and see pictures of) Bob Thomas's "Wings" in
Nantucket Sound

Rodney & Annette Smith read our "World
Championships" Notice and write:

Read about Jinnie Gordon's initiation to Shark Racing on Red
Dwarf

The "WAKE" - On April 1, 2001, 5
Sharks (10% of the RCYC Fleet) were destroyed by fire on the RCYC
"South Island", along with 7 other boats.

Here,
two skippers of the "lost" boats lead the Fleet at the Club
Sailpast, towing the "ashes" of the 5 Sharks, to initiate a
"Wake" in remembrance.
