"Charts" of the SharkBytes web site

Sorry, but this "Navigator's Table" is too small to roll out the full Charts ( let alone all 15 of them).

The Chart of the SharkBytes "Child Web" looked something like this, when it was first created and there is no room to include all the "data"!:

Here is a "narrative" description of your cruising ground:

It is transparent to the user but SharkBytes is actually fifteen FrontPage "webs":

There is a controlling "Root Web" which contains only the home page and, for the moment at least, the following "Child Webs":

  1. "SharkBytes" which holds "Latest News!" and all the day to day and administrative stuff,
  2. "The Boat Yard" for boat & equipment "classifieds" and some maintenance info,
  3. "The Crewbank" an interactive area for wanted and available crew,
  4. "Shark Talk" which holds the discussion groups,
  5. "EOS", recounting the escapades of John Dyer on his 'Atlantic Crossing attempt',
  6. "Gatherings" in which we list all known sightings of Sharks.
  7. "What's Going On?" which holds Racing&Cruising/Activities etc.,
  8. "The Guestbook" for visitors to the site
  9. "The Library" with all sorts of interesting reference materials
  10. "Lines, Tell Tales and other Yarns" holding Shark stories,
  11. "Members Corner" for items of special interest to members,
  12. "Membership" with information on joining the CSCA,
  13. "One Design", an explanation of our origins and character,
  14. "The Racing Page", containing all racing related matters,
  15. "Sharks at Play"  a gallery for all pictures.

Each of these "Child Webs" contains up to 100 pages, "grouped and linked in context" but can hold more.   They are continually changing as they are updated.

Across the whole site there is a (generally) consistent page layout.   Within each "child web", each page uses this same layout but has its own unique background and graphic "Theme".  Most pages have:

  1. A Banner or Title, which summarizes the content
  2. A Header holding (navigation bar) links to bordering pages in the web's hierarchy, and
  3. A Footer holding links back to four central "Charts":
                        Directory view,
                        Site Map,
                        Latest News and
Table of Contents (the "Compass" icon).

Directory View

Lets you carry a "small scale" chart out on deck with you.  It stays with you, wherever you go, as a text menu list in the narrow left margin (frame) of your page.  Click on a list item and your "destinations" appear in the larger right hand frame.

Site Map

Is a "larger scale" chart (table) which occupies your whole screen and supplied further detail as to what is contained within the various destination choices (labels).  Click on a label and your "destination" appears and occupies your full screen.

Page View (accessed through "Navigation")

Is a sort of cross between the Directory and the Site Map.  It gives you a side menu of labels but the destination pages appear "full screen"

Latest News

Is just what it says - a sort of "News sheet" - from which you can get to most new or recently changed pages and items.   It is available from any page in any view.

The  compass.gif (56962 bytes)  Table of Contents

These are the web site's "large scale" charts.  Like most such charts they cover only your immediate cruising area - in this case the actual "Child web site" you are in at the time, but they let you call up a hierarchical list of links to every page on that particular web and they have, in addition:

  1. a Text Search capability which will display links to the locations of any "text string" within the "Child web" and
  2. links to each of the other "Child webs" on the site.

Try this out by clicking on the compass below.
