188 "Hammerhead" out of Genesee Yaght Club in Steve Lee alcselee@frontiernet.net<< >>Wed 7/2/97 - Steve, I put your message on the Web Site but have not seen a reply. I do know that Tom Stewart (Midland Bay Sailing Club) replaced his keel bolts this year on "Homer" #196 (about your boat's age?) but I don't have any details. You might try to contact him. His address is :487 Islandview Lane, Midland, Ontario, L4R 5H4. Tel:705-527-1368 Bus:416-754-6187. You might also try : Brian Hanson: bjhanson@us.ibm.com Address 90 Sheldon Rd., Honeoye Falls, NY 14472 Tel: 716-624-8252 who has just restored #5. Details of his "restoration" are now on the Web Site with a link to his site - interesting stuff! Good Luck ..... Bill Bill<< >>Fri 7/4/97 - as far as the keel bolt question goes...I haven't done that yet on my boat, but I have inspected it. I'd separate it from the hull and re bed it.. I'm b&127getting a small leak in mine thru there. in an emergency (or rush I guess)..You could replace them in place, if you didn't mind the swim.. you just need to chip away the top part of the keel where they are countersunk and then knock them thru .. put in new bolts and re-epoxy them over..You can get epoxy that cures underwater if need be... I'd rather pull it out onto my cradle and do it there... I think it would be MUCH less stressful that way.... hope it helps, there might be someone with more experience in this than me.. Brian Hanson bhanson@frontiernet.net<< KeelboltsFrom: wkoucky CommentsDoes anyone know anything about replacing the keel bolts? I have read the posts and tried to send Richard Hinterhoeller a note but was bounced Re: KeelboltsFrom: jmdumitru@aol.com CommentsThe keel bolts I just removed were slightly worn, an engineer figures that 10% of their strength were gone, and they were put in in 1962! It took a half inch hexdive allan key to get two of the six out and a grinder was used to cut the tops off of the other 4 (the hex heads strip easily). I used a fire retardent blanket in the cabin so the fiberglass could be protected in some way. The bolts were screwed in from the top down and an extra long bolt appears to have been used and then ground off from the underside outside! After all the bolts were out I had a crane lift up the boat and the caulking/glue /whatever they used to stick it together at the factory stuck that keel on even when we wailed away with a sledgehammer from in the cabin and pried with a 2"*6"*6' from the outside. I thought the keel would fall off, however, she was stuck real good. Does this help? [http://shark24.org/discuss/_borders/talk2_aftr.htm]
