From Tom Sutherland: tsutherland@frontier.canrem.com

I was at the Toronto Boat Show and stopped by the Shark exhibit to chat where
I was happy to find out about some internet contacts. I own Shark #258 "San
Jose" and sail out of Sarnia Yacht Club previously from Grand Bend with John
Fraser and company. There are two of us active in the Sarnia fleet and hoping
for more.

Anyways, I am seeking out some expert advice and hopefully you can point me in
the right direction. I want to refinish my bottom and topsides this spring as
I believe the current VCtar is not doing me any favours around the course. I
would appreciate any advice from yourself or your "expert" friends who have
done it in the past or who know what works best.

Looking forward to chatting in the future, cheers,

and a reply .....

Subject: Bottoms

I noticed your question on Boat bottoms and thought you might like to know
my experience
my Shark is No 575 - Nessie and was due for the junk yard a few years ago.
Last year I spent all winter sanding and painting for what seemed like
eternity but eventually ended up with a pretty good looking boat
I 'm not exactly sure why you are not happy with the VC Tar is it too rough ?
I used the Interlux Interprotect system -2000 and it worked very well. The
hardest part was getting the old hardened anti fouling off. In the end I
used a mixture or grinding and Spray 9!
After that it was a case of finding a warm day and rolling on the paint like
crazy. As I wanted a smooth semi racing bottom I also had to spent many
hours ( days?) sanding . Epoxy is awfully abrasive . The best thing was to
buy discs in packets of 50!
Anyway after it was as smooth as posible ( I also did the Keel) I covered
it with VC 17 and after one season it seems to be working really well

Hope that helps
